Pacifica Beach, California, is one of the Bay Area’s best-kept secrets. It’s the perfect day trip from San Jose or a quick jaunt outside of San Francisco.

Pacifica is a small, lesser-known beach town close to San Francisco. It is often overlooked, as there is so much to do in San Francisco. But if you’re looking for a small beach escape, then Pacifica is the ideal location.

I first went to Pacifica a few years ago while visiting family, and fell in love with its small-town charm. Now that I live in Northern California, I come often and have gotten to know it very well.

This blog post will show you all the best things to do in Pacifica Beach California. The best thing is that Pacifica is really not that big, so you can pretty much do and see everything in one day. I’ll also suggest great places to eat and even to stay if you want to spend a few days here.

Where is Pacifica Beach California?

Pacifica Beach, California, is a small coastal town about 30-40 minutes south of San Francisco and is considered a part of the San Francisco Bay Area, along the Peninsula. While it is so close to San Fran, it is actually a part of San Mateo County, which encapsulates the best parts of Highway 1 in Northern California.

If you’re looking for a great outdoor spot to relax in SF, then the Presidio is a great spot. But if you want to leave the city and head to the coast, then Pacifica is your best option.

How’s the Weather in Pacifica?

Pacifica is known for being gray and overcast. Don’t come here hoping for warm sunny beaches.

Pacifica is full of microclimates due to its location along the coast. When I spent a full day in Pacifica, it was warm and sunny in San Jose when I left. It was cloudy when I arrived in Pacifica an hour later. It was hot and sunny while I ate lunch on an outside patio, and then rainy and windy an hour later while at Rockaway Beach.

I finally left the area around 4 pm because it started raining slightly, and I wasn’t dressed appropriately for the sharp turn in the weather. Because of the constant changes, I suggest coming prepared. Bring a rain jacket, shoes for walking, and summer clothes for the moments the sun comes out.

Is there good hiking in Pacifica?

Yes, the hiking (and mountain biking) in Pacifica is fantastic, especially if you like long coastal walks. Here is a list of the best hiking trails in Pacifica on AllTrails, including the Mori Loop Trail and the Devil’s Slide Trail.

I use AllTrails Plus when I go hiking. I highly recommend it as you can download offline maps, and send out “lifelines” to friends and family to let them know exactly where you are. You can rate trails, and get inspired to try new ones. The membership is $35/year, but with this discount, it is just $25 for the year. That’s barely $2/month.

Things to do in Pacifica Beach California

Pacifica Beach is a small town that crawls along the Pacific Coast, and has 4 main areas of the city. From north to south, they are: Esplanade Beach, Sharp Park Beach, Rockaway Beach, and Linda Mar Beach.

Each little beach area is like its own little village. I have divided this blog post into sections by each of these areas, starting with Linda Mar, which is both the southernmost beach and the most popular.

Linda Mar

The Pacifica State Beach in Linda Mar is the most popular in the area. The sand is soft and white, and the beach is wide. This is the best beach for surfing and playing in the water, as it lacks the big rocks that line the other beaches.

There is a paid beach parking lot nearby, but it fills up quickly on warm summer days. If you go on a summer day, you may need to park a few blocks away and walk to the beach. There are free bathrooms available next to the parking lot near Taco Bell.

Linda Mar Beach. There are many rocks and white sand. In the distance is a hill with houses.

What to do in Linda Mar

There is more to the Linda Mar area than just the beach. But of course, the beach is the main attraction.

Take a Surfing Lesson

In Linda Mar, the main beach is called the Pacifica State Beach. Here you’ll see that the coast is lined with dozens of surfers at all hours of the day. If you want to take a surfing lesson, this is the best spot to do so as the waves are not as rough as they are in other parts along the coast.

Aramai Point Hike

On the north end of the Pacifica State Beach, you can find some trails that lead up to Aramai Point, which is a great spot to get views of the area. You can follow the trail north as it continues along the coast.

Sanchez Adobe Park

The Sanchez Adobe Park is free to enter and a great place to visit with kids. When I visited, there was a school field trip, and the kids learned about the history of the building, the old rancho lifestyle, and its traditions. You are free to wander around the park as you want. There are boards with information explaining the history.

Go Mountain Biking

Some of the most beautiful mountain biking trails in the Bay Area are found right here in Pacifica. In Linda Mar, head to the start of the Pacifica Bike Trails. You can park along Higgins Way. Climb up Pedro Mountain Road. Once you cross over the peak, you’ll have amazing views as you descend the other side.

If you’re looking for some technical rides, check out The Mile, or do loops on Boyscout.

Where to eat in Linda Mar

The best places are near the coast.

Three small 5oz pours of craft beer at Humble Sea.
Humble Sea Brewing

Humble Sea Brewing is a great spot to stop for a craft beer or a burger. Unfortunately, there is no ocean view, but it has a nice atmosphere.

Nicki's hand holds up Taco Bell food with the ocean in the background.
Taco Bell

I’m not joking when I tell you to stop in at Taco Bell. It has the best outdoor patio and ocean view in the area. There’s even a real bar inside.

Soul Grind is one of the most popular coffee shops in Pacifica for good reason. This is the interior of the cafe with many people.
Soul Grind Coffee Roasters

This is easily the most popular cafe in the area. Expect to wait in line. They have cozy seating areas and a good menu.

Where to Stay in Linda Mar

Rockaway Beach

Rockaway Beach has the most “touristy” vibes in Pacifica, as it is full of hotels, shops, and restaurants. You can find the majority of activities in the area on the west side of Highway 1. The east side is mostly just residential.

What to do in Rockaway Beach

It is easy to walk around Rockaway Beach and see everything on foot.

Go to the farmer’s market

There is a farmer’s market every Wednesday from 2-6, April through December. There are a ton of great international options, as well as a rotisserie chicken truck that smelled amazing. They even have live music here.

Hang out at the small beaches

There is a small black sand beach on each side of Rockaway Beach, with huge piles of rocks and boulders in between. Before heading to the beach, though, you should check the high and low tide times. There is not much sand to be enjoyed during high tide.

Go shopping

If you’re looking for some souvenirs, this is the place. There are several small shops full of the standard beachy items and local handmade goods.

Take a stroll along the nature paths

On the south side of Rockaway, you can follow the trails up the hill that lead to Linda Mar or Aramai Point. On the north side, you can follow trails that lead up to Mori Point or around the lower areas.

Where to eat in Rockaway Beach

Here are a few popular places to eat and drink in Rockaway:

Where to Stay in Rockaway Beach

Rockaway Beach seems to have the best options for hotels and accommodations:

Sharp Park Beach

Sharp Park Beach is a very long black sand beach that extends on both sides of the municipal pier. There are walking trails along the coast. The area inland from the beach is full of small beach homes and a cute main Street with stylish restaurants and cafes.

What to do in Sharp Park Beach

The majority of the attractions in this area are along the coast, but a few things are closer to Highway 1.

Pacifica Municipal Pier

The Municipal Pier is full of fishermen. It is not super unique, just your standard concrete pier. But it does give you a great view looking back at the beach.

Visit the Pacifica Coastside Museum

This is a free museum that accepts donations. It is only open two days a week (Thursday & Saturday, 1-4 pm). You can find the history of the area here, built inside an old church.

Sam’s Castle

This castle was built in 1908 by a San Francisco attorney with the idea of being “fireproof” and “earthquake proof.” The castle saw several owners, but was purchased by Sam Mazza in 1959, hence the name.

If you want to visit this castle, you need to do a bit of planning ahead. Tickets are $30 and need to be purchased in advance online, sometimes by 1-2 weeks. It seems there are only tours on Saturdays.

Hike to Mori Point

There are several trails of varying length that bring you to Mori Point. But if you didn’t come prepared for a hike and just want to see the bluff, then I suggest parking at the Old Mori Road Coastal Trailhead, like I did. It’s an easy 15-20 minute walk from your car to the outlook. There is even a long staircase that makes the walk up easier.

On the north side, you can look over and see the black sand beach and municipal pier at Sharp Park Beach. To the south, you can see cliffs and the longer coastal trail that will take you to Rockaway Beach.

Take a coastal walk

There is a coastal walk that extends the entire length of Sharp Park Beach. It continues south to Mori Point and beyond. It also extends north towards Esplanade Beach. There is a ton of parking parallel to the beach, so you shouldn’t have a hard time finding parking if it’s not peak summer.

Where to eat in Sharp Park Beach

There are a few great eateries spread out around Sharp Park Beach.

This is a very local Mexican joint that has $2.49 taco deals every Tuesday.

The Chit Chat Cafe on the Pier
Chit Chat Cafe

This Chit Chat Cafe is right at the start of the pier, offering great views and good menu options.

A cute coffee shop in Sharp Park Beach in Pacifica
Craftsman Coffee

This is a small hole-in-the-wall cafe that is super cute with cozy, welcoming interiors.

Where to Stay in Sharp Park Beach

The majority of accommodations in this area are private homes:

Esplanade Beach

Esplanade Beach is the most northern area of Pacifica. The beach is down below a bunch of rocky cliffs, so it’s not the best spot for a beach day. You need to be very mindful of high tide.

Of all parts of Pacifica, the Esplanade area feels the most “local” or “beach bummy” than any other part. There are fewer tourist activities to do here, and it is largely a residential area.

Looking down on Esplanade Beach

What to do at Esplanade Beach

There isn’t a ton to do here, but take in the views.

Take a stroll

Grab a cup of coffee and walk along the short Esplanade Beach Overlook Trail. You can get some fantastic views of the Pacific Ocean from here, from the cliffs up above.

Where to eat in Esplanade Beach

Here are a few great places to stop in:

Chit Chat Cafe

There are a few Chit Chat Cafes in the area. This one is very cozy and cute. But be aware that the service is super slow, so don’t go if you’re in a hurry. It’s a place where locals gather. From the outside, it looks pretty sketchy. But inside it’s very cute.

Bakeries

The most well-known bakeries in the area are Mazzetti’s Bakery and Rosalind Bakery. You can get great pastries from both places, though Rosalind is a bit more modern and Mazzetti’s is more traditional. Rosalind’s serves as both a bakery and a cafe.

Where to Stay in Esplanade Beach

As this area is more local, there are no hotels, and mostly just private homes for rent:

Pacifica Beach California FAQs

Is Pacifica close to San Francisco?

Pacifica is 25-40 minutes south of San Francisco, depending on which part of the city you’re coming from. It takes 40 minutes to drive from The Presidio in San Francisco (northernmost point) to Linda Mar in Pacifica (southernmost point).

Is Pacifica a good place to live?

Pacifica (along with Half Moon Bay) is considered to be one of the more affordable areas to live in the Bay Area. That said, I wouldn’t say it is “cheap” as it is still the Bay Area. But it is a great place to live if you don’t mind fog, and like a slower life than SF has to offer. You can’t beat daily coastal walks.

Final Thoughts on Pacifica Beach California

Pacifica is one of my favorite little towns in the Peninsula. It is quiet and chill and offers stunning views from the surrounding hiking trails. It is a nice escape from San Francisco if you get tired of the chaos of the city. I highly recommend checking out Pacifica if you’re in the area; you won’t regret it.
