Puerto Madero Buenos Aires is a shiny neighborhood in Argentina’s capital city. When you go there, it becomes apparent just how new and modern this area is. It is full of banks, towers, skyscrapers, and the headquarters of several of Argentina’s industry leaders, including YPF, a government-owned oil and gas company.

I have spent a lot of time in Puerto Madero over the years, taking long walks in the ecological reserve, eating choripans along the Costanera Sur, or having a beer along the canals at night.

This is your ultimate guide to Puerto Madero, Buenos Aires, including where to eat, what to do, and where to stay.

This is Puerto Madero Buenos Aires. You can see many buildings on the left side of the river and the Puente de la Mujer in the distance.

Summary of Puerto Madero

Puerto Madero is one of the newer and most visibly modern neighborhoods of Buenos Aires. It is slightly set apart from the rest of the city, as it is reachable only by several bridges or dams, along the Rio Darsena Sur. Several companies have offices in high-rise buildings there. There are several apartment buildings that go for high prices.

There are lots of free activities to do in Puerto Madero.

Many of the brick buildings along the river are repurposed old industrial structures and have a lot of history within their walls.

The Puerto Madero Buenos Aires Vibes

Puerto Madero feels clean. Both sides of the river are lined with restaurants, bars, and cafes that seem to be full of people all day long. Each location offers great views of the river.

The area is full of people wearing suits and getting coffee on their lunch breaks, or during happy hour once they get off. The nighttime scene tends to be a 30s and up crowd.

Is Puerto Madero worth visiting?

Yes! There are great parks in this area as well as good happy hour specials at the bars along the water. You don’t need more than half a day to see everything in Puerto Madero, but it is definitely worth a stop.

Why is Puerto Madero famous?

Puerto Madero is famous for its upscale dining and living accommodations. It is also known for the renovation of its old port into modern buildings full of restaurants and bars.

Transportation in Puerto Madero

The subte does not reach this area. However, there are several bus stops around the neighborhood, as Buenos Aires has great transportation. The closest subte stations are the ones from each line that stop near the Casa Rosada. You can easily walk to Puerto Madero from La Casa Rosada.

Go Shopping in Puerto Madero Buenos Aires

Puerto Madero is a great destination for shopping in Buenos Aires, with a variety of high-end shops and luxury boutiques. There is a weekend market in Puerto Madero near the Costanera Sur where you can find homemade goods.

Parks in Puerto Madero Buenos Aires

Puerto Madero has some of the best parks in Buenos Aires.

Parque Mujeres Argentinas

The Parque Mujeres Argentinas is a large park in Puerto Madero with benches and spots for playing football. I always see this park full of people exercising and playing with their dogs.

The Ecological Reserve

The Reserva Ecologica is a massive forest with paths for biking, walking, and running. It is closed on Mondays. You can see a variety of native plants and animals. You can rent bikes in the area (Eco Bici) and ride around the reserve.

Where to eat and drink in Puerto Madero

This area is full of both chain restaurants and cafes (several Starbucks and Mostaza’s), and high-end dining. There are bars along the river, and some even in the center of the river.

Peñon del Aguila

Peñon del Aguila, a brewery franchise, has a location right down on the water.

Siga la Vaca

One of the more well-known steak restaurants is called Siga la Vaca, which is an all-you-can-eat meat buffet with very high-quality meats. I highly recommend this place.

Eat a Choripan

A choripan is a chorizo in a bread bun. They are famous in Buenos Aires, but particularly famous along the Costanera Sur, where you can find dozens of food trucks and outdoor dining.

Things to see in Puerto Madero

There are not a ton of things to do in Puerto Madero, but it is worth spending a few hours, especially if you have 10 days in Buenos Aires.

El Puente de la Mujer

El Puente de la Mujer, or Women’s Bridge, is Puerto Madero’s most recognizable bridge. According to Wikipedia, “The design is a synthesis of the image of a couple dancing tango,” though it looks more like a high-heeled shoe on its side.

The bridge took about 3 years to build and was completed in 2001. The center of the bridge can swing open to allow for the passage of boats through the canal.

Las Regattas

There are two large regatta boats that sit in the river. They seem to be rarely open, but when they are, they serve as a museum of Argentina’s naval history called Buque Museo Fragata A.R.A. “Presidente Sarmiento.”

Stroll along the Costanera Sur

The Costanera Sur is a pathway along the small canal near the Ecological Reserve. There are several choripan food trucks, outdoor tables and chairs, and people riding bicycles around here. It is the perfect place to take a walk and escape the chaos of the city from time to time.

Where to stay in Puerto Madero Buenos Aires

Puerto Madero has several high-end hotels and apartments. It is not a very central location if you want to be close to the action in Buenos Aires, but it is a great place if you want to stay in luxury. Here are a few suggestions:

Puerto Madero Buenos Aires Final Thoughts

Puerto Madero is a great place to spend an afternoon strolling through the ecological reserve, eating a choripan on the Costanera Sur, or admiring the canals with a pint at happy hour. You can easily see this area in half a day. I don’t recommend staying in this area unless you are looking for high-end luxury hotels.
